AIM finishes Fall Asian clam benthic mat operations

After a grueling nearly 3 months of benthic mat placement, AIM wrapped up operations on Lake George on December  5th.  The company placed mats in several key locations in the Lake George village section of the lake including the Shephard’s Park beach and English Brook Delta.  AIM also placed mats in Hague, Diamond Point and Shelving Rock Bay.

Some key changes were made to the mat placement strategy in this go around allowing for what we all hope will be better success rates than previous applications.

This image shows the Shepard’s Park beach with mats placed going out into deeper water.  The orange specks are sandbags used to weight the mats down and keep them in place against wave action.

By BRIAN NEARING Staff writer

LAKE GEORGE — Efforts to smother invasive Asian clams in Lake George not far from Million Dollar Beach appear to be working, but a $475,000 budget won’t be enough.

Large mats placed this spring on the lake bottom atop a 5-acre infested area killed 97 percent of clams near nine shoreline resorts and the village beach, according to a report released Wednesday by the Lake George Asia Clam Rapid Response Task force.  Click here to read more.
