Upper Saranac Lake

Link to Contracting Party: Upper Saranac Lake Foundation (USLF)

Overview

AIM, LLC has been contracted by the Upper Saranac Lake Foundation (USLF) since 2008 to conduct lake-wide Eurasian watermilfoil management operations.  Upper Saranac Lake began its milfoil control efforts in 2001 by teaming up with the Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) to begin diving operations to remove the plant from known areas.  AWI also began surveying and monitoring the lake to track the progress of the infestation and direct their dive operations.  In 2004, the USLF was able to raise enough funds to take on the increasing milfoil problem lake-wide with as many as six separate teams of divers under the supervision of Tim Ladue employed by AWI.  AIM co-founders Andrew Lewis and Tommy Thomson were divers on this project and worked for AWI on Upper Saranac Lake until 2007.  Thanks to the increased level of effort, the milfoil densities across the lake were brought way down to maintenance phase levels and when AIM took over the work the challenge was to reduce cost while continuing to manage low density milfoil across a 5,000 acre lake.

Trends

USL graphAbove is a history of the comparison between diver hours worked (essentially cost of management) to pounds of milfoil harvested on Upper Saranac Lake.   In 2008, AIM took on an ambitious reduction of diver time to attempt to lower costs and maintain lake-wide management.  From 2008 to 2010 AIM experimented and adjusted their methods to eventually develop what is the present day management strategy on the lake.  As shown in 2011 and 2012, the ratio of diver hours to pounds of milfoil harvested is almost exactly 1.  This is representative of an ideal level of management to maintain and reduce milfoil levels lake-wide.  In 2013 there is a major decrease in milfoil removed indicating the success of this method.  The lessons learned from nine years of milfoil management on this lake are what AIM brings to every new project no matter how big or small.USL harvrest totals graph

The chart above illustrates how milfoil harvest levels are at their lowest since 2006.  The chart belows shows the comparison between 2006 and 2013 in terms of diver hours worked to achieve those low harvest levels.

Thanks to lessons learned and years of experience we are managing the whole lake with under one sixth the labor it required in 2006.

2008

Summary of 2008 Operations 2008 was the first year for AIM to operate as a company on Upper Saranac Lake.  After running the crew in 2007 for AWI, AIM was formed in 2007 and the company received the contract for lake-wide milfoil management in 2008.  Work went forward with a 5 diver and 2 topwater …

2009

Summary of 2009 Operations AIM took on lake-wide management in 2009 by deploying two crew sizes over the course of a 10 week work period.  An eight and four diver crew were used to cover the key problematic littoral areas of the lake. While all large bays and key areas received good coverage, it was …
